Diamondback Terrapin in the Canal

While walking down Third Avenue on my way to Lowe's on July 1st, I noticed a little turtle lazily paddling in that "cove" of the Canal just south of 3rd Street and adjacent to the alleged Whole Foods site. Of course I knew immediately that this was most likely a Diamondback Terrapin because it is the only turtle that lives in brackish water. That's a picture of the turtle.

Hmm... what does this mean? If anyone knows much about the habitat requirements of this species of turtle (such as if they only require reasonably clean water), whether it has been seen in the canal before, etc, please let us know!
